They say necessity is the
mother of invention...

That has certainly been true in the development of Churchteams.com.

For years I felt like I was the bottleneck for people finding the small group that best fits them. I love the work of helping people find groups and encouraging group leaders, but I am also passionate about decentralizing ministry and empowering others.

So, in the fall of 1999 I talked to one of our small group leaders who was also a computer programmer, Mark Horan, about designing an Internet based tool to help. Together, we envisioned a tool that would not only manage small groups, but that would also help people evaluate and track their spiritual growth and spiritual gifts.

God wired me up to be both a small groups pastor and a systems guy and Mark is totally devoted to the church and also a technical guy. We had done other projects together before, so it was natural for us to form a partnership and start putting the Churchteams vision together. We launched the GroupFinder tool in August, 2000 and did the first phase of working the bugs out in our church.

Within six months others expressed interest in what we were doing, so we began to expand what we were doing to serve other churches as well. From the beginning, Mark built the tool so that many essential features could be customized to fit the unique needs of each church. Since that time, other pastors and small group leaders have joined the effort to improve this tool by giving us great ideas for features and reports that make it more flexible and effective.

Our prayer is God might use this tool to help our people more effectively and intentionally become fully devoted followers of Christ and by his grace yours as well.
